Movement Limitations in the Fibula?

πŸ‘£ That fibula…

πŸ‘£ A non weight bearing bone…

πŸ‘£ How is it that a non-weight bearing bone can play havoc with the whole system?

πŸ‘£ Quite simply the system responds to movement … and the fibula has bags of movement potential. We might be guilty of thinking it just sits on the outside of the tibia… doing nothing…

πŸ‘£ But actually we can question the amount of movement that the tibia has to do, and in comparison to the fibula, it’s actually very little…

πŸ‘£ The tibia sits atop the talus bone articulating at the ankle in only one plane of motion – sagittal plane which gives us dorsi and plantarflexion at the TCJ… and it sits under the femur which rotates internally and externally above it. The tibia is not really moving like it’s comrade the fibula…

πŸ‘£ When the fibula is not free to move, both knee and rearfoot mechanics are severely affected.

πŸ‘£ A subsequent lack of rearfoot pronation/ supination impedes femoral internal and external rotation which impacts on pelvic motion.

πŸ‘£ Pelvic motion is critical for spinal motion and so pretty quickly we can see how fibula mechanics also affect the upper structures such as spine, shoulders and neck.

πŸ‘£ In the past week I have had the pleasure of working with two fibula fractures. Both directly leading to improved movement in the upper parts of the body: 1) neck and jaw release πŸ˜ƒ and 2) a developing shoulder bursitis πŸ˜ƒ

πŸ‘£ Seems like a leap to go from ankle ➑️ shoulder but following a step by step awareness of how one joint communicates to the next we can quickly see it’s a possibility.

πŸ‘£ Prior to today the solution for the bursitis was injections… now the lady has a movement solution, increased mobility and a plan to move forwards with.

πŸ‘£ Yes… a fibula can play havoc with your system.

πŸ‘£ Ankle sprains/ breaks… doesn’t matter how long ago… get your fibula checked and moving with your rearfoot and knee πŸ˜ƒ
