πŸ‘£ Many many people walk with their feet turned out. And many many people have pronated feet. And yes this is pretty much a direct correlation. I always teach that a turned out foot (or duck πŸ¦† foot) is an indicator that the extensor chain needs firing up… The extensor chain is the muscles of extension such as foot supination muscles, quads and glutes. Your whole leg responds to pronation.

πŸ‘£ Some people have one foot turned out more than the other. This is a sure fire indicator that the more turned out foot requires a better quality Pronation. Pronation activates the muscles of supination and kick starts the extensor chain from the ground up by naturally eccentrically loading the tissue of the extensor chain. You absolutely need need need to be able to pronate your feet well. It is a necessary and vital part of human movement. It is not EVIL as I explain in my book WhatTheFoot.

πŸ‘£ Simply turning your foot straight as a conscious activity will NEVER provide a long term solution for this. You must teach your foot bones to access a good pronation, and demand a response from the many muscles set up to manage that pronation and bring about a resultant supination. The desired outcome from this approach is that your feet naturally turn themselves back in… so you don’t have to. After all you are only turning them out in a bid to let your therapist know that you could do with some help in pronating them.

Our Wake Your Feet Up programme is tailored to helping you understand your feet. Assess your own feet. Work out whats missing if you can and even if not (!), go ahead and start teaching them to move properly and well. so that your brain can begin to alter it’s long standing perception of how your feet rest, move and be.
